The runic alphabet or Futhark to the Vikings, gets its name from the first six letters of their alphabet; f, u, th, a, r, k. This is also like the word "alphabet" which is derived from the first two letters of the greek alphabet; alpha and beta. All of these runes do not only represent a sound but each of them also has a meaning which is connected to Norse mythology. For example, the rune for the letter F could mean cattle, gold, or wealth in general. The rune for L is associated with water, and D with daylight.

Many scholars believe that the early Scandinavians originally used runes for everyday communication and later used solely for magical purposes.

Words The Vikings Gave Us

The Vikings gave us many words that we now use in everyday conversation. Some of these are: ransack, slaughter, steak, skill, hell, husband, wing, dirt, stagger, run, sprint, leg, foot, ugly, weak and mug, just to name a few, but the the best word they gave us is... cake.
